Poi Lessons - Videos - Articles

I was given a pair of LED poi by a friend of mine.  I like the way the look and feel but they are far too light-weight for my tastes.  I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas as to how to add weight without damaging the diodes or blocking the light.

The poi have a flat spot on one side that unscrews (battery compartment/LEDs) and pops out.  The rest of the "ball" is hollow.  I'm thinking maybe a bunch of plastic wrap but I still don't think that that would add enough weight. Any help is appreciated.

For glow poi balls that I've used in socks, I've thrown smaller sandbags, or things like hackysacks ontop of the poi in the sock.

It's significantly added more weight, and because it was in the sock it was kept in place ontop of the poi, and not actually blocking any of the light.
Apart from that, I'm not really sure - except for maybe getting just heavier poi in general?
I've found that (for me at least) Oggz have been ALMOST the perfect weight. If they were a tiny bit heavier they'd be absolute perfection. Ever used Oggz?

I have not. I'm just learning and started with those and then moved to sock poi which have a much nicer weight. The poi I have are glow balls in a mesh net so I am not sure how sand bags would work. I guess I can try it but I could see that blocking the light.

i've seen some people add some thin plastic tubing to the string of the poi, which settles near the head when spun. It doesn't add much weight, but it isn't too uncomfortable for most moves either. Not very soft if you hit yourself, but neither is the pvc ball or plastic head of LED poi.
Sock poi on the other hand costs ~$8 to make a set, I use extra fabric material as cushion for lead (wrapped in a balloon) as a counter weight, and rice/balloon as a head for the poi, about 1/3-1/4 weight ratio. Soft and effective for learning/practicing (keywords) throws, isolations, a lot of neat tricks.

In my case, I'm more motivated to learn with sock poi, when hitting myself in the crotch/face doesn't make me have to take a 20 minute time-out or give up all together.

After playing with my glow poi some more, I think hacky sacks might work. I'll have to try it out.

My sock poi cost me about $3 to make. I love the weight they have, though I am now thinking they could be heavier (just 1/2c rice in each)... I'm going to stick with the sock poi I've got for a while before making any that are heavier though.

I got them weighted :D I just took my homemade sock poi and stuffed them in on top of the glow balls. I REALLY like the weight that gives me. Now, if I can just figure out what that weight is, then I can make a pair of practice poi that won't give me a massive headache or risk breaking if I hit myself.
