Poi Lessons - Videos - Articles

I began training in ballet, tap and jazz when I was 5 and continued to venture into pointe, contemporary, hip hop, pom, etc... I danced at the University, taught at a studio, choreographed and coached for a high school team and then...the burn out happened. After a few years hiatus (I never really stopped, but didn't consistently go to the studio)... I am now experiencing dance through hooping and will soon begin training as an aerialist! The forms of expression through dance are endless, it's beautiful!

I began with getting bored with everything i have ever tried, sports, knitting, drawing, then i found the magical circle aka the hula hoop and realized that there will never be and end. There will always be a new move, a new combination, adding another hoop, doing everything in reverse, teaching, performing, there is no end. And if you think there is an end, light it on fire. And that intrigues me. Some may say there is no end to all the other things I have tried but to me hooping is my passion and it took me a long time to find it.
I took up Poi in march and have really loved every second of it. I love the flow and beauty of the movements.
I can't wait to see what other things there out there for me. I'm already researching my new toy. I want to learn.

Right now, I'm working on the prep work for aerial... strengthening, increasing flexibility and stamina. It'll be a long road, since the resources in my area for that are limited, but it should be a fun adventure!

I feel the same way! There's always something more to explore--you can always make it your own! The love of the hoop is highly infectious!!

You said it, you can make it your own,
I think that's what I love so much. With other things it seemed as though I had to follow instructions, follow rules, i am a rule breaker a risk taker. I can hoop however I want and in any way I want. I think my heart would die without it. my heart aches when i can't hoop.

I have no formal training in dance but have loved it since I was a wee lad. I use to watch Top of The Pops and try to mimick the dancers on there. I quickly became borde/ annoyed at how particular styles of dance and music went together and have spent the last 10 years finding my own style which I try to make as addaptable and interprative as possible for what ever the music and setting is.

I was a volunteer in setting up the Beltane event in Edinburgh back in 2001. It was pretty amazing and there was some really creative fire performance. When I got back to the USA, I immediately dove in to poi, staff, and gear development. It has taken me to running Flamma Aeterna / Fire Mecca, so I guess it has taken me pretty far!

I honestly never thought that I would be where I am right now. I was never much of a dancer, i mean hell after some failed attempts in sports I sort of just religated myself to computers. Then a friend told me that I needed to go to a rave with him, so I did. Then after a 3 day party in 3 different locations in NYC, when I finally realized what happened durring the weekend I started dancing with glowsticks and learning "liquid". Then after a few more parties I saw people stringing and I needed to learn how to do that and after some trial and error I tought myself some moves, that was about 5 years ago. I really just started diving into hardcore training within the past year and now I just lit up for the first time on the 4th of july... and since i'm unemployed I figuered this is the perfect time to try my hand at having my own business, so I made cards and built a website from the ground up and i'm selling myself for private parties and such. I never really thought that this is where i'd be and especially that i'd be dancing infront of a crowd like I do now.
