Hi all!

I've been messing around for a couple of days with my brand spanking new contact staff (w00t!), and I'm noticing a problem. I have really long hair - just about down to the small of my back - and it really stings when I roll that grippy neoprene sleeving across my shoulder blades. It keeps getting tied up in my hair and removing chunks at a time!

Has anybody else had this problem and how do you sort it? I'd buy a hat, but I can never find one which suits me :P Ideally does anybody have any hair styling tips which could allow me to hold it up above my neck-line, while not looking completely silly? I've seen some mens' hair sticks online, but wouldn't know where to start with using them, or even if they'd be the slightest bit of use :P

from my experience with hair sticks is they work but only in situations when not being active.
They don't really stay very well without a lot of bobby pins.

You might just have to put it up

i used to have the same problem with hooping and grippy tape, I recently cut my hair off so I don't have that problem anymore, but I always put it in a messy updo (which is girly) or wore a hat.

What kinds of hats do you like?

Yeah, having long hair and doing contact sucks! I always put my hair in a bun at the top of my head, or something else that can help is wearing a thick headband and also putting your hair in a bun on top of your head...I've noticed it's really the hair at the nape of my neck that gets pulled out, especially when doing neck rolls and duck outs, so the headband is helpful to buffer that. Good luck!

Thanks both of you for your answers :D Hats have never been my strong point. I've never found one which suits me well, but putting it up in a bun sounds like an idea (now I just have to learn how! Men, eh? :P) . The headband idea is a cracking one though - I was wondering how I could keep the straggly bits at the back safe.

Thanks guys!!!

Yeah I found a thread on Home of Poi about it after posting here... Their concensus seems to be to get a hair cut, but that's just not happening :P It's taken me so long to grow it I know I'd regret it as soon as I'd done it!

Yeah my mate Mike is doing exactly the same thing. He's had long hair for probably longer than I have in total.

You know, I have long hair (not quite the length yours is) and all I do is put it up in a bandana. I have no problems and Walmart has a great selection of designs. You can also get them at other locations, but the ones Walmart sells, seem to be the right size. I do agree with you about not chopping the hair off. So give a bandana a try.

I've found the perfect mix for myself is to tie my hair up in a bun, then to tie a bandanna round my forehead, covering the edges of my hair at the front, and the little hairs on my neck. I then wet my hair before the burn, just in case! It's possibly a little over-paranoid, but I don't want to risk burning my mane, and it's worked perfectly! I can smack myself in the head, and nothing's burnt when I'm done :-)
