The Fire Garden

Poi Lessons - Videos - Articles

So I just got some fire poi and I've been practicing with them but I wasn't sure where the swivels go. I've tried them up by the handles and by the poi heads, they both seem to work fine but I was wondering if you all had any thoughts or experiences to share on how you do it?

By the handle will be best, as there they will allow the most mass to spin.

I've always put swivels by the handles (when I've bothered used swivels), but with normal fire poi, I've never really noticed the benefit. The swivels will help for orbitals and tangles, and you'll need the swivel to be by the handle to get any benefit.

Yeah I have to agree with Danny - The swivels will make very little difference until you try out some tangle type stuff, but definitely put them at the handle.

I put swivels in both places and have for years. Then one time I tried a set of poi from a friend who only had them in one place and I could feel more drag on the poi. For the extra few bucks, for me, it has always been worth it to have it both places (head and handle ends). HTH.

I agree with Isa, especially of you are wrapping the chain on your hands. The handle swivel becomes useless if you "wrap up" while spinning. Since I spin with a pinch grip somewhere on the chain, only the head-end swivel is useful to me.
