The Fire Garden

with so many fuels on the market theres plenty to choose from ......Do we choose or just buy whats in the shops because its there ??
do we prefer certain brands for brightness/colour of flame??

for eating fire especially i have to use differant fuels for differant manipulations eg body transfers require a fuel with a high flash point for quick/easy ignition.. fuel which i would not consider for breathing due to increased risk of flashbacks....
so what fuels do you all use and why :)

Pre-pac paraffin (the brand they always sell in petrol stations), seems to me to be the best. It's by far the cleanest burning paraffin i have used (in terms of smoke and fumes), and has a longer burn time.

I avoid hardware chain brands (stuff from B&Q etc.), as it is always poor quality, really smokey and on occasion has actually made me feel quite ill from the fumes it gives off.

yeah .I have felt ill from B&Q,s kerosene/perosene "parrafin" .. . garden centers too seem to have extreamly hot buring fuels( usefull for greenhouses , not usefull to fuel fire balls ) . i always try to stay away from cheap clear fuels too ,for fear of nasty cleanring chems ill be sure to look out for it ..
might be a nice idea to do some fuel testing get a golbal census on fuel bands/types, quialty, price , ????

Cool yeah guess the same as me , is that a naptha based fuel, the camping gas type stuff ???
the only camp fuel we get in this country comes in pressureized cans so its a bit hard to find a good quantity of the stuff but lantern feul is in abundance , it just doesnt light quick enough for transfers .. i have found other sorces of naptha fuel but its very expensive .. if only the postal service would ship fuels..

Lets break this down a little more ... "What fuel do you use for which art?" Some of the things people use for poi I would never put in my mouth.

totally agree with you there brian ... i am very carefull of how any times a month i eat fire , try to keep it to once or twice and breathing i rarely do just because i cant find a fuel im happy putting in my mouth ..... .powder is ok .. but i cant get it to look as impressive as with a liquid .... what do you use ...and for what arts ( i guess i shgould have been a little clearer sorry )

Firewater as available in Australia isn't available in the UK so the closest thing you're likely to find is ShellSol or D60, I think. Seem to have very similar properties/flashpoint etc :)

Ummm well, for my poi and staff, I found this out through trial and error, I was never very good in chemistry lol so i don't know anything about flash points, though i should, i gather it would be beneficial...anyway, in order to travel lightly, my fuel bag is rather small, where i insert my quart size paint can. In this paint can i mix about 1/3 Ultra Pure lamp oil and the rest I fill with Coleman's camp fuel. I mix these so that the flame is bigger (and hotter...) (camp fuel) and so that it lasts longer (lamp oil). I can't use just fuel...it doesn't last as long, and frankly, I hate it :). In addition, Ultra Pure and Coleman's are well known brands, and they are simply very convenient. I would however really really like to find out more about biodegradable fuels!

Yeah I would like to know some of it myself. I cant get pure methanol cause its only for idustrial use and I dont have friends in there but I can get fairly good ethanol (85% ethanol, 15% benzin) Im not sure how good that mix is for my poi though.

except for that do I use mostly lamp oil.
