How did you first get into fire / glow arts, and how long have you been involved?
A friend of mine started going to classes in early '08 and I saw a few people messing with them at Download Festival that year. I decided 'I HAVE to learn to do this!', so made myself some sockpoi sometime around August. I haven't looked back since! I've also been spinning contact staff for a few months... Hmm... What to choose next?
Tell us about your life outside of fire / glow arts...
I'm a IT Network Manager with a history of dabbling in the odd bit of hedonistic behaviour. I love all kinds of music... Rocker by trade, but there ain't nothin' like raving my pants off til 5am! I also play the guitar at a fairly amateur level. I have a predeliction for dying my hair crazy colours and a penchant for piercings and tattoos. So far got 6 in my face and 7 in total! Thinking horizontal anti-brow next XD

Totally buzzing! This feeling's infectiouuuuusssssss!

Hey all!

A quick and unnecessarily hyperactive post for ya!

Odd happenings last night at the spinning meetup... We were all happily spinning away in our little corner of the housing estate's recreational area, when a CSO (Community Service Officer; basically a police officer with little or no actual powers except to spot people up to no good and call for backup) started walking towards us. We all immediately thought "Bugger!", assuming that this was going to be the end of our happy little spin… Continue

Around China in 16 days...

I'm off to China for 2 weeks tomorrow! Whoohoo! Just thought I'd leave a post to say expect videos and pictures aplenty of me spinning all across the country!

Visiting Shanghai, Beijing, the Li river, Xian, Chengdong and the wall (not necessarily in that order!).

As always when I bugger off places, anybody who has their birthday while I'm away - have an awesome time, and you have my best wishes!

Now just for the matter of packing, which I haven't even started. Damn my inherent disorganisation… Continue

Off to Download!!!!!!!

Just a quick 'un!

Off to Download Festival tomorrow morning (well, this morning technically)! Sooooooooooo excited! If anybody's going who's reading this... Look in Blue camp for the massive BUTLINS sign. That's us... The Happy Campers!

Just wanted to say that if I miss anybody's birthday I'm really sorry, but I'm probably completely drunk in the middle of a field :P Take it as red that you've got a birthday wish from me!

Anyway... Just wanted to convey my utter excitement.

Hope you all have… Continue

What a success!!! (aka Ow! My poor swollen arms!)

So North Lakes Spinners had our first meetup last night. Y'know I don't know if it could have gone any better! Everybody there had a great time and learnt something, and we even gave some locals something interesting to watch at the park :P I've even made a (really bad) little clip to celebrate - it's under the videos here. Sorry about the quality of editing, it's the first time I've ever used Adobe Premiere.

I was m… Continue

Yup, staff spinning rocks :-D

I've been meaning to take up some kind of staff spinning for a while now, and I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a 140cm contact staff from Firetoys. When it arrived I was kind of surprised by the weight of it, given that it's made mostly of fibreglass,

After an hour or 2 of playing with it in the park this evening, though, I officially love it. I seem to have taken to it relatively easily - I think the poi has helped with the arm positions BTB etc...

Anybody got any ideas on an orde… Continue

Corkscrew's a spot on choice as an entirely new move, but to really help flow, I'd suggest learning the 3 beat weave in reverse, and possibly the windmill, as these all link together to make a fountain, and it feels great to do, and can be used in s…

That'd be because the site is http://www.thefiregarden.com not http://thefiregarden.com. They've not bought the non-www domain. :-)

Absolutely amazing. And to think I have friends in Leicester saying there's nothing to do there! I'd be over the moon if anything like this happened around here!

Thanks! I guess I skipped some steps. I learned the btb weaves and meltdowns, but i never did any turning with either of them. That'll likely sure up the motions. I'll get back on it. thanks for the advice!

i went to australia just a year ago and it was the place where i wanna live.. new zeland would be even more calm place for sure..
anyway i am in uk to.. edinburgh.. came to do studies..
what did you do in china?? it is traveling hey.. it could be interesting to see too:) anyway you dont need much money to travel.. it needs just a few savings for cheap flight and food and you always find a place to sleep.. and once you start traveling you meet ppl and if you go on well with them you usually get offered to come to their country.. that is how i was lucky and i was happy to invite them and it was good.. you receive as well as you give..
it works :) usually :) sometimes not but that doesnt matter,, i am still alive lol..
where do you live in uk?

damn right, I'll make a point of coming down at some stage. Made my own ropedart, cathedral stack fire wick, about 10" of chain(to take the heat) and 4.5m of climbing rope treated with chalk powder to reduce the friction of it(the main injuries you're gonna get doing dart are rope burns-get a triple neck strike wrong and you look like you just had a run in with the gallows pole) also made a light weight version out of braided ribbon tipped with a kobutan(martial arts weapon) but it's a bit dangerous for general use

cheers dude, poi's been my obsession for about 3 years now but it's led me into learning to spin just about everything I come across, rope dart just kinda happened about a year ago after watching a kung fu championship. No particular course for tutorials, just watched a lot of videos on youtube. It's quite hard hard to see/understand what's going on at first so just try to pick out the most simple elements of the moves and after some practice, a few months(&some bruises) you start to see and understand more and more of whats going on in the complicated moves and your brain starts to invent it's own variations. Think i definitely need to come south to meet more spinners and get more onto the rave scene, glasgow is a bit empty:/

Well, in my opinion, the science of hedonism is a wide open field of endeavor and I'm committed to doing the research. :)

By the way thanks for the tip. I've seen people do some very cool stuff with poi and I'm pretty excited about the whole weave things so bring on the reverse!!
