How did you first get into fire / glow arts, and how long have you been involved?
Let's just say I was a catholic school girl who set more fires than most...
Truth be told, I'm not the least bit into religion. So when I was subjected to 4 years of it (14 if you count pre-k through 8th grade), I decided going to raves and experimenting with mind-altering substances while mingling with new and unusual people would be just the right medicine.
It was.
I found a kind of hope, liberation, and courage that I had never been able to exude in everyday life. And it was all waiting for me on the dance floor. So I danced, and danced, and danced...
But unfortunately, I'd arrived at the tail-end of an era- a time when raves where held in the middle of nowhere. There were no fences, no security, and no tickets. All we had were map points and word-of-mouth. By the late '90s, Denver had all but lost the soul and beauty of its rave culture.
Lucky for me, I eventually connected with the Burners. I'd known about Burning Man for years, but I dunno... I guess it took the right people at the right place at the right time for everything to snap into place.
I'm just so thankful it did.
Along the way I've become a much stronger dancer, having developed my style from elements of break-dancing, pop 'n' lock, liquid, and just crazy shit I see people do! I also picked up some juggling, and a wee-bit of poi and staff.
At the moment, I really want to improve my poi skills so I can start lighting them lil' bitches on fire! I'd also like to build on my break-dancing skills, especially when it comes to proper footwork (my 6-step and crab walk still need work).
Tell us about your life outside of fire / glow arts...
I've grown miles and moved mountains by way of mind and might. Tonight, my plight: bring fire to night and light to sight.
